At last, it’s finished. Whatever it is, you’ve completed it, and at this very moment its sitting on your table or in your garage or in your backyard. The design is carefully documented and you realize that, at last, you’re ready to patent it. You’re going to be rich – but wait. Where do you go from here?

The next big step is the patent process. Thanks to the internet, this is actually going to be much easier than it sounds – though chances are it will cost you. Your first step will be to decide where you want to go with your invention. One option many people fail to realize is that some big corporations might be willing to pay big money for inventions. If you have a great new piece of software or computer equipment and you don’t have the resources to produce it yourself, you can get in touch with one of the major software companies and see if they’re interested in what you have to offer.

That aside, an easy way to go is to find a good patent lawyer. At this point you’ll have to watch out for scams – reputable houses will give you their price right up front as well as things like past deals and firm history. Just remember that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The last option is to patent it yourself. The government websites are invaluable for this. This will be the most difficult, but it will also be the cheapest. Remember, though, that a good patent lawyer will give you a tighter patent, making it easier to benefit from your invention. These are all things you’ll have to consider – but if you’re smart enough to design a great invention, you’re more than capable of putting your invention on the market.
