Light Bulbs For The House Print E-mail

Light bulbs have become almost as fun to use as candles.  What would Edison think about that?  After all, we can’t buy just a “regular” light bulb anymore.  We have to buy a 3-way bulb or a dimmable one, a candle-shaped bulb, or a tiny appliance light bulb.  Did Edison ever dream we would do more than light our homes with this invention?

The light bulb plays a part in every aspect of our home lives.  If we want to be romantic, we need a dimmable light bulb with a dimmer switch.  If we want to read, we need bright light that won’t glare.  Our sewing machines and vacuum cleaners have light bulbs.  Have you ever replaced light bulbs in your microwave oven or your flashlight?  Some of these miracles of Edison’s are tiny!  Probably the tiniest light bulb is one that we read by in those little book lights we use so we don’t wake our spouses or roommates.

Did Edison ever think we would put light bulbs on the outside of our houses?  Or that we would make light bulbs blink – on purpose!  What would he think of the night light we use so our little ones won’t get scared in the dark?   We even have special light bulbs in our make-up mirrors and bathrooms.  We buy one kind of light bulb to kill bugs and another one to make plants grow.  Light bulbs allow us to see pictures on the wall.  We buy some light bulbs just because they’re pretty.

Regardless of what kind they are, if we didn’t have light bulbs, we’d be using candles – and we might not like them as much as we do now.
